A family-owned Latrobe paving contractor since 1965
Cooper’s has worked out of Latrobe for three generations. The company is owned and operated by Mike Cooper, who personally supervises the jobs — so you’re dealing directly with the owner, not passed off to a subcontractor. We’re a Westmoreland County Chamber of Commerce member, we do residential and commercial work, and we quote every job up front with no surprise charges. Most of our work comes from Latrobe and the towns right around it — Greensburg, Murrysville, Export, and Ligonier included.
Our asphalt and blacktop paving services
- New asphalt driveway installation — built from the ground up: grading, base preparation, paving, and compaction. This is the core of what we do.
- Commercial paving and parking lots — new lots and large-area paving for local businesses.
- Crack filling — sealing cracks before water gets into the base and turns a small problem into a pothole.
- Asphalt curbing — clean, durable edges for driveways and lots.
Is blacktop the same as asphalt?
For a homeowner’s purposes, yes — “blacktop” and “asphalt” describe the same material family: stone aggregate bound with asphalt cement, laid hot and compacted smooth. You’ll hear both words used interchangeably around here. When people say they want a “blacktop driveway,” they’re describing a standard asphalt driveway, and that’s what we install.
Why the base matters more than anything in Western PA
Around Latrobe, the thing that decides whether a driveway lasts 20 years or cracks up in five isn’t the top layer you can see — it’s the base underneath and the drainage around it. Our freeze-thaw winters push water into any weak spot; that water freezes, expands, and lifts the pavement. A driveway installed from the ground up with a properly prepared, well-draining base holds up to that cycle. One paved over a soft or poorly graded base won’t, no matter how good the surface looks on day one. That’s the main reason we focus on full, from-the-ground-up installation rather than shortcuts.
New construction and ground-up installations
A lot of our work is new-construction paving — first-time driveways and lots where there’s nothing to build on yet. That’s where doing the base right from the start pays off most, and it’s the work Cooper’s is known for in Latrobe.
