Driveway paving for Ligonier homes

Ligonier has a lot of older homes and longer rural driveways, and both come with their own paving considerations — grade, drainage, and a base that can take a Laurel Highlands winter. Cooper’s has installed driveways across Westmoreland County for three generations, and we approach every one the same way: get the base and drainage right first, then pave.

What we install:

  • New asphalt (blacktop) driveways — from-the-ground-up installation for first-time driveways and full replacements.
  • Crack filling — to seal existing cracks before water works into the base.
  • Asphalt curbing — clean edges that also help direct water off the driveway.

Why the base is everything up here

In and around Ligonier, driveways live through repeated freeze-thaw cycles all winter. Water gets into any weak point, freezes, expands, and lifts or cracks the surface. The driveways that last are the ones built on a properly graded, well-draining base — which is why we focus on full installation rather than laying a thin surface over whatever’s already there. On rural and sloped Ligonier properties especially, getting the grade and drainage right is what separates a driveway that lasts decades from one that fails early.

Blacktop or asphalt — what’s the difference?

None that matters for your driveway. “Blacktop” and “asphalt” are two names for the same thing: aggregate bound with asphalt cement, laid hot and rolled smooth. A blacktop driveway is a standard asphalt driveway.
